Most marriages don’t fall apart overnight.
The distance usually begins one brick at a time.
One unresolved argument. One offense that was never addressed. One “I’m fine” when you weren’t fine. One wound that was buried instead of healed.
Eventually, those bricks can become a wall between husband and wife.
One of the most dangerous bricks is unforgiveness.
Scripture warns us in Ephesians 4:26–27, “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”
Unresolved anger can become territory the enemy uses to create division, bitterness, resentment, and distance in your marriage.
And unforgiveness doesn't always look like hatred.
Sometimes it looks like keeping score.
Sometimes it looks like sarcasm and contempt.
Sometimes it looks like withdrawing emotionally or physically.
Sometimes it looks like constantly reminding your spouse of what they did.
Sometimes it looks like telling everyone else what your spouse did while refusing to deal with it before God.
The problem is that bitterness rarely stays contained. Hebrews 12:15 warns about a “bitter root” that can grow and cause trouble and defile many.
But here is something every husband and wife needs to understand:
Forgiveness does not mean what happened didn't hurt.
Forgiveness doesn't mean you immediately trust again. It doesn't mean boundaries are unnecessary. It doesn't mean reconciliation happens overnight.
Forgiveness means you release the debt to God.
You stop trying to sit in the judgment seat and hand the case back to the One who judges perfectly.
Colossians 3:13 tells us to forgive as the Lord forgave us.
That means forgiveness is not primarily about how you feel. It's about obedience.
You may not feel ready.
You may still be hurt.
You may still have questions.
But you can choose to surrender the offense to God and ask Him to heal what you cannot heal yourself.
And sometimes forgiveness is something you have to choose again when an old wound resurfaces.
Don't let yesterday's offense become tomorrow's stronghold.
Don't keep ammunition in your marriage.
Don't keep a silent scorecard.
Don't give bitterness a permanent residence in your heart.
Protect your covenant. Close the door. Give the debt to God.
Your marriage is worth fighting for.
One Flesh. One Fight. One Mission.
