You can sleep in the same bed, raise the same children, attend the same church, and still be moving in two completely different spiritual directions.
When a husband and wife are spiritually misaligned, marriage can feel like two people pulling the same vehicle in opposite directions. There may be plenty of effort, but very little movement.
Spiritual Alignment Begins With Surrender
Spiritual alignment doesn't mean you and your spouse are identical. You may pray differently, have different spiritual gifts, and grow at different speeds.
Different doesn't mean divided.
Spiritual alignment happens when a husband and wife intentionally bring their beliefs, priorities, decisions, habits, and mission under the lordship of Jesus Christ.
The question isn't simply, “Do we both believe in God?”
The deeper question is, “Are we both surrendering our lives and our marriage to God?”
And that surrender begins personally.
Instead of focusing on everything your spouse needs to change, pray the heart of Psalm 139: “Search me, God, and know my heart.”
Ask God to reveal where pride, passivity, control, resentment, comfort, or compromise may be pulling you out of alignment with Him.
You cannot force your spouse into spiritual maturity. You cannot nag or manipulate them into a deeper relationship with Jesus.
But you can surrender yourself.
You can pray. Remain faithful. Model Christ. Speak truth with love. And give the Holy Spirit room to work.
Jesus should not simply be included in your marriage. He should be the Commander of your marriage.
Signs You've Become Spiritually Misaligned
Spiritual drift rarely happens overnight. It usually develops through busyness, compromise, unresolved hurt, passivity, secrecy, and neglect.
Some warning signs include:
-
You have individual relationships with God but rarely pray or study Scripture together.
-
Major decisions are made without seeking God together.
-
One spouse continually protects habits or behaviors that damage the covenant.
-
Biblical conversations become competitions instead of opportunities for growth.
-
Your marriage has become entirely about bills, children, schedules, and survival, with no shared Kingdom mission.
God didn't bring you together merely to operate a household.
If you don't know what you're fighting for together, eventually you may start fighting each other.
How Do You Get Spiritually Realigned?
Begin rebuilding shared spiritual intimacy.
Pray together. Read Scripture together. Talk about what God is teaching you. Seek Him before major decisions. Remove anything that continually undermines your covenant. And begin asking what Kingdom mission God has given you as husband and wife.
You don't need an elaborate spiritual routine. Even ten intentional minutes together can begin changing the direction of your marriage.
Consistency matters more than performance.
Take the Spiritual Alignment Challenge
Set aside 30 minutes with your spouse this week. Put away your phones and pray:
“Jesus, You are Lord of this marriage. Show us where we are united and where we have drifted.”
Talk honestly about where you're spiritually connected, where you're disconnected, and identify one spiritual habit you can practice together for the next seven days.
Don't try to fix everything overnight.
Take one faithful step in the same direction.
Every time you choose truth over secrecy, repentance over pride, prayer over panic, and covenant over selfish preference, you realign.
God isn't calling husbands and wives to become identical.
He's calling them to become one.
Same Commander. Same Truth. Same direction.
When a husband and wife stand shoulder to shoulder under the authority of Jesus Christ, hell doesn't see two isolated believers.
It sees a Covenant Army.
One Flesh. One Fight. One Mission.
